Nine steps to a successful new year

Happy 2008! The New Year holds promise of improvement and achievement for each of us. We go from one year to the next setting and working on our goals, but I wonder, do we check often enough to make sure the goals we're striving for serve our lives now?

This past month, I took a half day class on dreaming, and we created a treasure map. For those unfamiliar, a treasure map is a visual representation of what you want to achieve for the coming year (or another set period of time). I've attended this class for three years now, and while the concept of my board has not changed, the individual goals have shifted from year to year. I am glad to see these changes! It means I am adjusting my goals as the road of life twists and turns.

To achieve success this year, try the following:

1. DREAM! Day-dream, night-dream, any-kind-of-dream. Get quiet and centered. Ask yourself, what do you see for yourself at the end of 2008? What is your home like? Who are you working with? Who are you spending your time with? What do you feel like? Allow yourself to FEEL your thoughts.

2. BELIEVE. Try to accept your dreams without allowing your brain to tell you it's too hard, or you can't achieve the life you want. If you have doubts, acknowledge them and then pretend just for today that you know exactly how to get where you want to be. Remember, you don't have to know every step, you just need to know the first step.

3. EXAMINE. Inspect your current goals to be sure they reflect you achieving the life you dream about, and that you believe you can have. :)

4. ADJUST. Re-write your goals so they reflect your current dream. Remember, if it's not what you really want, you will have a hard time achieving it. You might as well work toward what you truly want!

5. RECORD. Write your goals down. There is great power in simply recording your goals on paper. Keep that paper until next year. You may be surprised at what you accomplish.

6. BREAK IT DOWN. What small steps can you take to help you toward your goal? Write down at least one step for each goal. More if you can think further ahead. I find that most of us know what we need to do to achieve a goal, but we're overwhelmed with the thought of doing it all. To overcome this, break your goal down into smaller, achievable steps.

7. SCHEDULE IT. Now that you've decided on a few first steps, pull out your calendar. Schedule those first steps on your calendar as top priorities. I always tell my clients...if it matters, it should be on your calendar.

8. REVIEW. Once a month or once a quarter, review your goals, where you stand in regards to achieving them, and what next step will move you forward. This will ensure that you don't become stagnate.

9. CELEBRATE! Take a moment to reflect on what you've achieved, even if you've allowed yourself to dream only for a moment. Dreaming is very powerful. Our dreams have a way of becoming reality if we allow them to be our focus.

This year, I encourage you to examine your goals or resolutions. Make sure they are your own and that they reflect your life right now. You'll have much better success, I promise you!

Wishing you endless success,

Tia
